4 Many years of Resilience: One Household’s Perspective on Our Psychological Well being System
Last updated on January 31st, 2025
Introduction
Mental health issues affect millions of families, yet their struggles and resilience often go unnoticed. As a healthcare leader, I have worked to bring holistic therapies into mental health care. However, my personal experience with mental illness in my family has shaped my perspective deeply.
A Personal Story of Struggles and Strength
For over four decades, my family has supported my older brother, who lives with schizophrenia. From early symptoms to daily challenges, we have faced many difficulties. My father initially misunderstood the illness, and stigma in our Asian-American community made things harder. Despite these obstacles, my family has remained committed to my brother’s well-being.
Challenges in the Healthcare System
Getting a diagnosis and proper treatment for my brother was not easy. He was initially misdiagnosed, leading to years of confusion and frustration. Even with my healthcare background, I struggled to find the right support. The system is often fragmented, with limited accessible resources. This experience highlights the urgent need for better education and easier access to mental health care.
The Importance of Early Diagnosis and Access to Proper Care
A major turning point was my brother’s correct diagnosis and access to effective treatment. Long-acting injectables helped him become more social, hygienic, and functional. Today, he lives independently with daily supervision. This transformation shows the power of early intervention, proper medication, and a strong support system.
Caregiving: The Unsung Heroes
My sister, Corrine, plays a vital role as my brother’s primary caregiver. She ensures he takes his medication and maintains a healthy environment. Caregiving requires patience, love, and selflessness. Caregivers deserve recognition and must also prioritize their own well-being.
Breaking the Stigma and Starting Conversations
Stigma, especially in our Asian-American community, was a major challenge. Initially, we hid my brother’s condition to avoid judgment. Over time, we realized that silence only deepened the shame and isolation. Today, we openly discuss mental health to help break the stigma. I encourage families to share their experiences and seek support.
Hope for the Future
Reflecting on our journey, I see the importance of resilience, support, and education. Mental health challenges affect many families, but sharing stories can ease the path for others. My hope is for a world where mental health is treated with the same compassion as physical health. No family should feel alone in their struggle.
